  1. Basically, manganese sitting on the ground is about 255 BHN hard. Through work hardening, it gets up to 550 BHN hard. Work hardening is achieved by direct impact - this is why manganese works well for jaws and concaves (but not so well for side liners where sliding abrasion wear is more prevalent). If the rock being crushed is not hard enough to work harden the manganese or is there are a lot of fines in the material being crushed, the manganese will strip away before getting a chance to work harden - the greater % of manganese, the quicker this will happen - this means that in the wrong application a 21% jaw may actually wear out quicker than an 18% jaw. When in the correct application, the 21% will work harden quicker than the 18% and give far better wear life.
It all depends on the application and the crushing action, what is actually wearing the manganese
